Heard rattling when car in gear. Our mechanic said it is the main bearing in the transmission and it would get louder and then seize up eventually. This car has been regularly and well maintained and has only 107 k on it. The clutch is still original and the trans needs replacing before it ? local dealer says there is nothing he do. We are going to put a new transmission in and drive it for another 40 k then dump it. Am completely disappointed in this car and in Toyota.

I own a 2004 Toyota Matrix 2wd base model with 5-speed manual transmission. I had 75,000 miles on it and very few issues until one day on the highway, the transmission seized up completely. The only recourse was to replace the entire transmission assembly.

Manual transmission seized while driving Toyota Matrix. Car totally locked up and stopped on the freeway. Car only had 114,000 miles on it and was regularly serviced. Faulty equipment and dangerous.

The car has a continuous grumble from clutch area, Toyota says it has a input shaft bearing failure. Estimated repair $3500. 00.

Driving down the highway our (03 Toyota Matrix, manual trans), (north bound I-45 conroe, texas) the car abruptly started a thumping slapping sound. From the frount end. Asap! pulled to the side of the road, stopped and turned the car off. My husband arrived, to figure out the problem. He had me turn the car on without starting and pushed the vehicle. I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix xrs 6 speed manual transmission. I purchased the car new and have serviced the car with the dealership from day one. Today I brought it in for its 45000 mile service and told them to check the clutch because we noticed it sticking/slipping in 5th gear. Turns out I need to replace the clutch at a cost of $1200 even though I have their platinum service/extended warranty plan. I haven't even worn out the brakes and I have to replace the clutch!!!! I am a 46 year old mother and have driven several cars with a manual transmission and never had to replace a clutch with such low mileage. I read on edmunds car space about this and it said to come to your website to document this.

About 10:00 pm when I was just pulling on to I-84 in downtown hartford, CT the manual transmission of my Toyota Matrix made a very loud grinding sound and I could not move. Thankfully, my momentum enabled me to get over to the side of the highway but I was still sticking out into the right lane just around a curve in the road. A state police trouper pulled behind me almost immediately and put on his lights to warn cars away. Otherwise, I am certain my car would have been rear-ended while I waited for the tow truck. The repair shop I had the car towed to said that a bearing had failed and destroyed the transmission. I had to get a completely new transmission at a cost of over $2000. This car had over 105,000 miles on it, but they were mostly highway miles and the transmission should never have failed this early.

After normal driving and wear and tear (103,000 miles), manual transmission on 2003 Toyota Matrix has gone bad, resulting in a needed replacement of the transmission, clutch, and clutch plate.

I have a 2004 Matrix (5 speed manual) with 85k and the throwout bearing has failed. I was driving home from a concert with a few youth kids on Saturday night. I was entering the 1-10e trying to merge in with traffic when the throwout bearing failed. I tried to shift into 3rd gear, but it was stuck in 2nd. I had to slam the gear into place to prevent getting run over by a SUV. This was my second near-death experience this year in my car due to the transmission. Earlier, when the car was at 74k, the front axle on the transmission broke. This broke in the middle of a busy intersection where I had to keep swaying my body forward until the car had enough momentum to roll across. After replacing the front axle, I really do not have the money to fix another transmission issue. Toyota needs to recall their transmissions on the 2004 Matrix, I don't know how many more times I can afford to cheat death.

I own a 2003 Toyota Matrix with a manual transmission. The car only has 92,000 miles and the tranny needs to be replaced due to a bad bearing. From my research on the web I have seen this happen to many others. I spoke to a repair shop that does rebuilds and he informed me that Toyota had gotten bad bearings and used them on a series of transmissions and they tend to go bad around 80k to 120k miles. He himself has rebuilt many.

I have driven many standards over the years and never had this much trouble with a manual transmission. The last clutch I had to replace was on a 1991 Suzuki swift that had over 220,000 miles.
